West Asia peace process cannot be postponed: India

United Nations. India on Thursday told the UN Security Council that the Middle East peace process cannot be postponed for long. Along with this, India also underlined the need to resume direct talks between Israel and Palestine. Addressing the UN Security Council meeting on West Asia (including the Palestine issue), Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs Vikas Swarup urged all stakeholders to de-escalate tensions and avoid provocation. “The peace process cannot be postponed for long. The standoff only leads to a loss of trust between the parties and encourages the possibility of violence.

Swarup stressed the need for immediate resumption of the Middle East peace process and direct dialogue between Israel and Palestine. “India supports all diplomatic efforts, including the ‘Quartet’, that aim to restore this dialogue and strengthen the international community’s collective commitment to the peace process,” he said. Reiterating his commitment, Swarup said there is no “alternative” to a two-state solution for meaningful and lasting peace.
