Chandigarh. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal on Saturday appeared before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the 2015 Kotkapura police firing incident. After being summoned by the SIT, Sukhbir reached the Punjab Police Officer Institute located at Sector 32 at around 11 am. Sukhbir was the Deputy Chief Minister of the state at the time of this incident in 2015 and also held the charge of Home Department. The matter is related to the alleged sacrilege of a religious book and people were protesting in Faridkot when the police opened fire on them.
In support of the SAD president, senior leaders including Bikram Singh Majithia, Balwinder Singh Bhundar, NK Sharma and Daljit Singh Cheema, other senior Punjab police officers reached the institute. Led by Additional Director General of Police (Vigilance Bureau) LK Yadav, the SIT on Tuesday questioned top Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for nearly two and a half hours. The Punjab government, after getting directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, constituted a new SIT to probe the incident. This new team is probing two FIRs registered on October 14, 2015 and August 7, 2018 in connection with the Kotkapura incident. In another similar demonstration, police had opened fire at Behbal Kalan in Faridkot, in which two persons were killed and a separate investigation is on in the matter.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Saturday slammed Sukhbir Singh Badal, saying the new SIT team is “closer to bringing justice to the soul of Punjab”. Singh tweeted, “Six years of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib… justice was not done in two years of your rule…after this justice was not done even in 4.5 years…today new SIT team to bring justice to the soul of Punjab And you cry for political interference. Political interference was that, due to which justice was not delivered in six years.
