Italy beat Austria to reach Euro quarter-finals

Italy will take on the winner of Sunday’s match between defending champions Portugal and top-ranked Belgium in the quarter-finals in Munich on Friday.

Federico Chiesa and Matteo Pessina scored in extra time as Italy beat Austria 2-1 in a thrilling European Football Championship pre-quarterfinal clash here on Saturday. A goal was scored after more than 19 hours against the record-breaking Italy team and the team registered their record 12th consecutive win and made it to the quarter-finals of Euro 2020. Federico scored in the 95th minute while Pesina scored in the 105th minute.

Sasa Klajdik scored the only goal for Austria in the 114th minute. Chiesa and Pescina, both goalscorers for Italy, were brought in as substitutes by coach Roberto Mencini. Chiesa’s father, Enrico Chiesa, also scored for Italy 25 years ago at Euro 1996 in England, but then the team was eliminated from the group stage.
