Manila. Philippine Benigno Aquino III, a former president of the United States and a descendant of the country’s most prominent pro-democracy political family, died on Tuesday. He was 61 years old. Aquino’s brother and public relations officials gave this information. Former Senator Bam Aquino said he was deeply saddened by the passing of his brother. “He devoted his entire life to the Philippine people,” he said. Family members did not provide detailed information about his death.

Benigno was admitted to the Metropolitan Manila Hospital on Tuesday morning. His former cabinet official, Rogelio Singson, told that Benigno Aquino was on ‘dialysis’ and was soon to undergo a ‘kidney transplant’. Aquino was the country’s president from 2010 to 2016. He was the heir to a political family that was seen as a bulwark against authoritarianism in the Philippines. His father and former Senator Benigno S. Aquino Jr. was assassinated in 1983 while in military custody at Manila International Airport. His mother, Corazon Aquino, led the 1986 “People’s Rebellion”, which led to the overthrow of dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
