Beijing. A massive fire broke out at a martial arts school in China’s Henan province early Friday, killing at least 18 people. Most of the dead were children. Apart from this, 16 other people were also injured in this accident. The fire broke out on the first floor of Zhenxing Martial Arts Center in the early hours when children were sleeping. This boarding school, located in Xicheng County of Shuangqi City, had a total of 34 children. Hong Kong-based newspaper South China quoted local media as saying that four people were seriously injured and 12 people suffered minor injuries. An eyewitness said he heard children shouting from the school building.
The eyewitness said, “All the children were screaming and pleading for help. We tried pouring water on it to douse the fire, but could not douse the fire. Gradually the fire became so severe that no one could approach it to extinguish it.” Authorities have started interrogation by taking the owner of the school, Chen Lin, into custody.
According to the Beijing-based Ministry of Emergency Management, 18 out of 34 people living in the school have died in the accident. There have been several incidents of fire in China in recent times, in view of which the central government has ordered a nationwide security inspection. On June 13, a gas explosion in China’s Hubei province killed 12 people and injured 150 others. Eight people were detained in connection with the gas explosion.
