12 German soldiers injured in attack on UN mission in Mali


Germany’s defense minister said on Friday that 12 German soldiers and a soldier from another country were wounded in an attack on soldiers involved in a UN mission in Mali.

Berlin. Germany’s defense minister said on Friday that 12 German soldiers and a soldier from another country were wounded in an attack on soldiers involved in a UN mission in Mali. The UN mission in the country had earlier said 15 peacekeepers were injured when a vehicle exploded at a local operations base in the village area. German Defense Minister Annegret Krampkrenbar said three soldiers were seriously injured.

He told reporters in Bonn, Germany, that the condition of two soldiers was stable while the third soldier was undergoing surgery. All the wounded soldiers were airlifted to the village where they are being treated at medical centers in Germany, France and China. “Military operations at the site are yet to be completed,” he said.

He said a German plane would fly to the village at night to bring the wounded soldiers home on Saturday. Hundreds of German soldiers are taking part in UN stability and EU training missions in the West African country. Mali has been trying to rein in Islamic extremism since 2012.
